July 2024 – Storm Chasing in the USA

16th July 2024 Leave a Comment

We had an excellent talk by Chris Bell to kick off our club’s Jubilee Year. Chris is one of the directors of Weatherquest (a private weather forecasting company) and he also lectures in meteorology at the UEA, as well as sometimes presenting the weather forecast on LookEast.

Chris explained how he grew up in SE Texas and from an early age was interested in thunderstorms and even went looking for them! This was a hobby for many years. He showed us remarkable pictures of storm clouds with multiple flashes of lightning. “Tornado Alley” in the Great Plains of the US is a great place for chasing tornadoes; Chris explained how these are formed and what they are like – a funnel cloud, with a rotating column of air, and which doesn’t touch the ground.

Chris told us much more about his past experiences in chasing tornadoes and also explained very clearly the meteorological causes of all these phenomena
